5th Asia & Pacific Nurses Convention (ASPAN)
14 - 17 Nov 2001

Convention Theme

Three main domains were formulated around the theme of this Convention: “Exploring the Web of Nursing - Integrating Touch & Tech”. It is believed that the nursing profession will need to untangle challenging complexities by examining key factors which influence the nursing profession and its ability to validate and quantify nursing practice. Areas deserving attention include use of innovative technology, cost of healthcare, nursing manpower, nursing informatics and evidence based nursing.

The primary goal of the nursing profession is quality patient care. The issues in patient centred care such as patient education and empowerment, disease prevention and health promotion, and continuity of care must be comprehensively reviewed.

New Opportunites are abundant in this era of change. While the health service environment becomes more cost conscious, nurses must demonstrate its resourcefulness and abilities in providing cost-effective quality care. Nursing plays a pivotal role in the healthcare management of patients and their initiatives can influence health care policies. Nurses must be empowered, and be more autonomous, and accountable for their actions. Educational preparation for nurses, creation of a continuous learning environment and nursing specialisation are just some of the issues to discuss.

The following list provides some areas for discussion in this ASPAN Convention. It is by no means exhaustive.
